President Trump on Saturday amplified online comments critical of Representative Mar\u00eda Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican who earlier this month released an ad<\/a> directly rebuking his immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n Mr. Trump reposted on social media screenshots of more than a dozen comments from other accounts that criticized Ms. Salazar, who is up for re-election in November. One of the comments urged Mr. Trump to rescind his endorsement of her, and another said she ought to be replaced with \u201ca NEW Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n The comments were reactions to a post on X sharing a Washington Post report<\/a> about Latino voters in Ms. Salazar\u2019s district who took issue with Ms. Salazar\u2019s ad and continue to support Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n Ms. Salazar\u2019s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n The president\u2019s re-posts amounted to another point of friction between Mr. Trump and Republicans on the ballot this fall. A growing number have recently broken<\/a> with the president, whose low poll numbers threaten to hurt their chances in the midterms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Nine days ago, Ms. Salazar released an ad<\/a> saying that Mr. Trump\u2019s immigration efforts \u201chave gone too far\u201d and that his Hispanic voters \u201cfeel betrayed.\u201d (Recent polling suggests Mr. Trump is losing ground with those voters<\/a>.)<\/p>\n Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office the next day, Mr. Trump said he disagreed with Ms. Salazar but understood her position.<\/p>\n \u201cShe got a little bit soft on the border. I understand that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n A couple of days later, Ms. Salazar said on CBS News\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation\u201d<\/a> that she had a \u201cfantastic conversation\u201d with Mr. Trump, in which she again urged him to re-evaluate his approach to immigration.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was a gentleman, very courteous, very receptive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n The president\u2019s posts on Saturday drew some swift criticism. Mr. Trump was \u201cdemanding absolute loyalty from a member who has strongly supported him and is fighting for her life,\u201d Carlos Curbelo, a Republican former congressman from South Florida, wrote in a text message. He added that \u201cIt seems he prefers that Democrats flip that district rather than keeping someone who is with him a good 90 percent of the time. Doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n The nonpartisan Cook Political Report recently shifted<\/a> Ms. Salazar\u2019s seat from \u201clikely Republican\u201d to \u201clean Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n More subtle efforts by other Republicans to create some distance from Mr. Trump have also drawn notice.
